Just after my recent post on Girl Scout Roundups, I saw a collection of Roundup photos for sale on eBay.

No one bid on them, so I snapped them up at the last minute. Even if they aren’t of Nation’s Capital people, they are part of Girl Scout history and should be saved.

There were two dozen black and white snapshots, most stamped “August 1962,” which coincides with the Button Bay Roundup in Vermont.

The seller lives in Ohio, and one of the girls in some of the photos (not included here) seems to be wearing an Ohio State University sweatshirt.

I’ll share some of the photos here, perhaps readers can help with captions?

Whoever these ladies are, they seem to be having tremendous fun.

Next up: What happened to the Roundups?

Please post this on The Girl Scout Roundup Reunion page on Facebook… The 1965 reunion had a Facebook page also: Girl Scout Roundup 1965.

Thank you for saving this piece of our history!

    1. Please repost as necessary! I’m not a member of those groups.

  3. These are very familiar looking scenes to me. I have just spent several days ( snowzilla kept me indoors) sorting through all of my pictures. I grew up in Baltimore and my mother worked at the Baltimore Area council office, now GS of Central Maryland. I have her scrapbook with pics of her troop in College Park, MD and some of her days as a counselor at Camp May Flather. Anybody remember wearing a Macy?

    1. I would love to get copies of her photos!

      1. I have my mothers 10k Girl Scout ring from the 1920s-30s. She just passed away at 94. Would be happy to donate it please let me know where to send it! Carol James

These pictures brought back such good memories. This was the first time I had been away from home for an extended time. Remember waiting so anxiously in a telephone line to talk to my family. The comradadie was great.

    1. Try explaining a “phone line” to girls today!

These pictures bring back wonderful memories of Roundup ’62 to me, also. I think my ID number was 4M0080046, if my memory serves correctly. I remember hearing the vonTrapp Family one evening and the 50th Anniversary festivities; I also still have my straw hat with all the swaps on it… loved being a Girl Scout.

I was one of 40 Girls Scouts who represented Dayton, Ohio and Surrounding Areas at the 1962 Senior Girl Scout Roundup. I was a Brownie then Girl Scout for a total of 10 years and fortunately had the same Leader all 10 years. My Girl Scout Troop # was 524 and met in Vandalia, Ohio. I remember riding the train to and from the Roundup. My tent was in a group which included scouts from California and New York. It was interesting to see the Army Helicopter picture. When we were in the outside shower area, we went to the wall when the helicopter flew over! I really enjoyed the Roundup
because we met scouts from different parts of the world and there were 50th Anniversary activities. My 5 close friends of 70 years were in Girl Scouts with me.

I was the leader of 6 British Rangers to represent the UK at the Girl Scout Roundup held at Button Bay Vermont in 1962. I remember Maria von Trapp speaking to us one evening at a singalong. I did not know who she was at the time but have just finished reading her book in2024 entitled “The story of the Trapp Family Singers”_an excellent read
