For Mother’s Day in 2001, Girl Scouts from the Nation’s Capital council presented flowers and Mother’s Day cards to women whose sons and daughters served in the Vietnam War.

The ceremony took place at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC. It was sponsored by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund.

Thirty mothers, most dressed in white, attended. Girl Scouts gave each mother a long-stemmed pink rose and handmade card. Mothers of soldiers killed in the war then placed their card at the base of the panel bearing their child’s name.

The girls arranged over 500 Mother’s Day cards made by Washington-area elementary schools along the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on May 13, 2001.

The event recognized an often forgotten group of women and helped the girls connect with this era of US history.
