Actor Bruce Willis became the ultimate cookie dad in 2002, when he bought 12,000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to send to US troops deployed abroad.

Both Scout and Tallulah Willis, the younger daughters of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore were active Girl Scouts in Idaho.

(I don’t know if eldest daughter Rumer was a Girl Scout, but I do know that we were born in the same hospital in Paducah, KY, where Bruce was filming the 1989 movie In Country.)

As Bruce Willis told Good Housekeeping magazine in March 2003, “One day, she just said to me, ‘We should send some Girl Scout cookies over to the troops in Afghanistan’.”

The whole idea just stopped me in my tracks. I just thought it was a brilliant idea. So we looked into it.

Willis bought 12,000 boxes of cookies–8,000 pounds–and worked with the Department of Defense to arrange delivery.

The cases of cookies were loaded onto the USS John F. Kennedy and sent to US bases in the Middle East.

Captain Ronald H. Henderson, Jr., captain of the Kennedy, welcomed the donation:

One of the most important things we [sailors] give up is some of the rhythms of American life. One of the American traditions we miss most is Girl Scouts coming around and selling their cookies. I’m really pleased with the support of Mr. Willis and his daughter and I thank them for providing us with a small taste of America.

  1. Well alright Bruce!
Girl Dads are such an overlooked, important aspect of the Girl Scout experience. Thanks Daddy for always believing, I could.
